About Texas Bean Freak

Rooted in Texas. Saving Seeds for Tomorrow.

Welcome to Texas Bean Freak — where a deep love for the land, a passion for real food, and a commitment to preserving living history all come together in a seed packet.

Our Story

Texas Bean Freak was born from a simple but powerful idea: the varieties our grandparents grew deserve to survive. What started as a personal obsession with tracking down old-time bean and vegetable seeds — the kind passed hand-to-hand at farm sales and church potlucks — grew into something bigger. We couldn't stop at just growing them. We had to share them.

We're based in San Antonio, Texas, where we operate our nursery and test garden.

Grown & Tested in Central Texas

All of our seedlings are grown right at our San Antonio nursery. Our seeds are grown in our urban test garden or sourced through a wide network of dedicated seed growers. Every variety we carry is selected for its suitability to central Texas conditions — heat tolerance, soil adaptability, and seasonal timing. Before a variety makes it into our catalog, it's tested in our San Antonio test garden, so you can trust that what we sell actually performs here.

The OSSI Safe Seed Pledge

We are proud signatories of the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI) Safe Seed Pledge. This means we do not knowingly buy, sell, or trade genetically engineered seeds, and we support the right of farmers and gardeners to save, replant, and share seeds freely. It's a commitment to keeping seeds in the hands of the people who grow food — not locked up in patents.

Why Heirloom Varieties Matter

Every heirloom variety is a living piece of agricultural heritage. These are open-pollinated seeds — meaning you can save them, replant them, and pass them on — just as farmers have done for centuries. Unlike hybrid or commercial varieties bred for shelf life and uniformity, heirloom beans and vegetables are bred for flavor, resilience, and place.

Some of the varieties we carry are recognized by the Ark of Taste, a Slow Food international catalog of endangered heritage foods worth preserving. When you plant one of these seeds, you're not just growing a garden — you're helping keep a variety alive that might otherwise go extinct.

Our Mission

We believe food sovereignty starts with the seed. Our mission is to make heirloom and specialty seeds accessible to home gardeners, small farmers, and anyone who wants to grow something real — something with roots, flavor, and a future.

Whether you're a seasoned seed saver or just planting your first garden bed in central Texas, we're glad you're here. Every seed you plant is a vote for the kind of food system we all deserve.

Grow something worth saving.
