Arikara Yellow is an heirloom bush bean with a long, treasured history. According to Slow Foods USA the seeds were originally obtained from the Arikara tribe of North Dakota and introduced in Oscar Will’s Pioneer Indian Collection of seeds in the early 1900s.
The seed was documented by Lewis and Clark in the early 1800s and appropriated by early European colonizers, including Thomas Jefferson, who grew Arikara beans at Monticello.
Unique yellow/brown bean that is excellent for baking, soups and a dip.
Why do we love this bean? 1.Amazing drought tolerance which is great to conserve our precious San Antonio water, 2. the sturdy, bushy plants are great for containers or small spaces 3. Arikara Yellow bean is listed in the Ark of Taste as at risk due to lack of popularity, under appreciated heritage of the bean and the loss of traditional lands.
The bean works well in our 8B low/no water garden climate so this is definitely a variety that I recommend.
